What’s the point of taking supplements if your body is not absorbing them properly? Poor absorption, which leads to nutrient deficiency, can occur from intestinal hyperpermeability. You may be more familiar with the term Leaky Gut. This describes the process of materials passing from inside the gastrointestinal tract through the cells lining the gut wall and into the rest of the body without being broken down properly first. Some culprits that contribute to Leaky Gut are stress (physical/emotional), toxins, antibiotics, processed food, infections, parasites, blood sugar issues, food sensitivities, GMOs, and unbalanced gut flora. Did you know that almost 70% of our immune system is housed in our gut? If our gut is not functioning well, issues like chronic inflammation, auto-immunity, food intolerances, and nutrient deficiencies can arise. This is why I think it’s so important to focus on the gut first when beginning a healing program because, as I said, what’s the point of taking supplements if your body is not absorbing them? What a waste of money!
